What a sad story about the "bungling grass cutters" mowing down the rare snakeshead fritillaries in the mead beside the Silk Mills in Malmesbury. It was a very good idea to plant 150 bulbs and try to establish a colony of these attractive wild flowers in the meadow. The saddest part is that the crew who gave the mead its last cut of the summer and returned to give the first cut of the year were not told that in the autumn the bulbs had been planted amongst the grass.  more...
