Concerns over takeaway bid

From the Wiltshire Times, first published Tuesday 25th Dec 2007.

CONCERN has been raised over a bid to allow a takeaway service at a former restaurant located within the old Westbury Town Hall.

Despite being vacant for a year, the commercial agents have not been able to find a restaurant willing to take the premises over - and attribute this partly to the fact they cannot offer a takeaway service due to planning conditions.

Planning officers at West Wiltshire District Council have recommended a bid to vary the condition of previous planning consent, to allow a takeaway service, be granted.

But Westbury Town Council is concerned about the Grade II listed building, and believes having a takeaway in any form would be an insensitive use.

The district council's heritage officer had no objection however, and said having the takeaway status would not harm the character of the building.

South African eaterie Bush baby and I was the last tenant to use the premises.

The application will be debated by district councillors at a planning meeting on Thursday January 3.
