17-year-old is killed

A 17-year-old teenager has died after being knocked down while walking across a pedestrian crossing on Great Western Way.

The emergency services were called to reports of a road traffic collision Shortly before 1am today, Christmas Day.

They discovered the youth, who has not been identified, had been struck by a dark coloured hatchback car while using the pedestrian crossing over Great Western way by the Transfer Bridges.

Paramedics were unable to save the life of the un-named teenager who died at the scene.

Police said no identification would be released until December 27.

A man is in custody helping police with their inquiries.

Officers appealed for any witnesses to the accident or to people using Great Western Way at about 00.50am who saw a dark coloured hatchback car being driven.
