Kids help avert carols crisis

From the Wiltshire Times, first published Friday 14th Dec 2007.

PRIMARY school pupils in Melksham will be demonstrating the true spirit of Christmas today.

An annual carol concert at Firlawn Nursing Home in The Street, Holt, looked under threat after its regular singers were unable to make it. But manager Penny Jarvis called on her son Luke Dart, 28, a Year 5 teacher at King's Park Primary School in Lowbourne, to help avert the crisis.

Mr Dart's 34-strong class will be performing songs from a forthcoming production and traditional Christmas carols for residents this afternoon.

Transport has been provided free by the Big Yellow Bus Company based in Newtown, Bradford on Avon.

Yesterday the young singers were entertaining shoppers in Melksham by singing carols and show songs outside Iceland in the Avon Place Precinct.

Mr Dart said: "My mum said this year her carol singers were unable to make it for some reason and her residents really look forward to the event.

"She phoned me and said you're a teacher, can you sort something out?' "It will give the children some extra confidence for their production next week.

"They're good kids and like to do things for the local community."
