Chippenham angler top in league match

THE River Frome at Farleigh Hungerford was below its best on Wednesday for the Avon and Somerset Individual League match following heavy rainfall.

Top honours on the day went to Dennis Baker, from Chippenham, with a barbel backed by a few roach for a winning weight of 10lb 8oz, taken on legered worm.

Adam Mitchell, of Street, took second place with a mixed catch of chub and roach weighing 6lb 6oz, taken on Avon floated casters. Bob Ryan, from Melksham, clinched third prize with an all-bream catch weighing 5lb 4oz, taken on pole fished chopped worm.

Other placings: 4 Chris Ollis, Bath, 4lb 15oz; 5 Phil Baskerville, Frome, 4lb; 6 Steve Bacon, Bath, 3lb 14oz.

Willietts hits the jackpot

COMPETITORS enjoyed good sport in the Wilts Angling Open fished on Wednesday at Leech Pool.

In-form Bradford matchman Ian Willietts hit the jackpot again with a carp catch weighing 87lb 5oz, taken on pole-fished pellets to finish with more than double the weight of his nearest rival.

Fred Eagles, from Trowbridge, took second prize with another carp catch weighing 42lb 6oz, taken on pole-fished pellets. Gerry Lugg, from Beckington, clinched third prize with a carp catch weighing 39lb 8oz, with Jim Escott, from Melksham, in fourth place with a carp catch weighing 36lb 4oz.

Mills wins in close finish

THE Trowbridge Christmas match was switched from the flooded river to the Kennet and Avon Canal at Semington and Kings Arms where there was little to choose between the leading contenders.

Jason Mills, from Gillingham, won with a mixed catch of roach and skimmers weighing 6lb 12oz, taken on pole-fished punched bread.

Colin Gittings, of Trowbridge, took second prize with another roach and skimmer catch weighing 6lb 5oz, taken on pole-fished pinkies. Robert Randall, of Gillingham, was a close up third with yet another roach and skimmer mix, taken on pole fished punched bread.

Other placings: Steve Sibley, Melksham, 5lb 2oz; 5 Andy Pritchard, Westbury, 5lb 10oz; 6 Ian Willietts, Bradford, 5lb 1oz.
