Man held after police stand-off

From the Salisbury Journal, first published Wednesday 12th Dec 2007.

A MAN was detained under the Mental Health Act following a two-hour stand-off with police in Burley yesterday.

Police closed the road between Burley Street and Crow Hill shortly after 8.30am while officers negotiated with a man in the Smugglers Road car park.

Fears for the safety of the unnamed local man were first raised at about 4am and he was later discovered to be in the car park.

It is believed the man had a gun, but this has not been confirmed by Hampshire Police.

A statement released by the force following the incident said only that the man's safety was considered to be at risk and the area was contained in order to ensure his safety and that of members of the public.

The road was re-opened at about 10.30am.
