THE planting of four young trees in the grounds of Five Lanes Primary School in Worton was the first step in a project to increase the number of trees, shrubs and wild flowers in key areas of the village.
Schoolchildren and their teachers joined members of the parish council last week for the planting ceremony.
The project is the work of the initiative group set up by Worton and Marston Gardening Club to improve the look of a number of areas around the village.
Trees and wild roses are being planted near bus stops and native trees and hedging at the eastern entrance to Worton.
Wild flowers such as snowdrops, primroses and cowslips have been given by gardening club members, while donations in cash and kind have come from supportive villagers and Worton parish council.
Head teacher Sue Berry said: "As a school, we aim to make our children more aware of the natural world around them.
"It is very appropriate that the first tree to be planted - the field maple - is also the name of one of our classes."
