Homeless project under way

From the The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald, first published Friday 17th Feb 2006.

DOORWAY, the partnership between The Salvation Army and CVS North Wiltshire, is up and running in Chippenham.

The project, which is a drop-in centre for homeless adults and people in danger of becoming homeless because of their complex problems, provides hot meals, laundry facilities, one to one support and activities such as music workshops and IT training for three sessions a week.

Doorway is based on the successful pilot scheme, North Wiltshire Homelessness Project, which finished in December last year.

Captain Mary Wolfe said that she had seen remarkable signs of change in guests attending the centre, but sadly the project faced closure before the end of the year because of an estimated £12,000 deficit in its funding.

Captain Wolfe said: "I was delighted by the immediate response of those present which was to make a donation to the project of £1,000 from Chippenham Churches Together funds.

"This money will be put to very good use supporting homeless people and people with other complex needs to move on in their lives."

Doorway is also setting up a new Friends of Doorway group to support the project by fundraising and raising awareness locally.

Manager Margaret Cleverley said: "We have great hopes that once more people know about the good work we are doing, they will want to support us by making a donation, or getting involved in fundraising events which will help secure Doorway's future."
