STAY & FIGHT

JACK Smith hopes an extended stay at the County Ground beckons for him although he accepts a tough fight looms to win back his place in the short term. The defender admits he has already had an informal chat with manager Iffy Onuora about the future and the 22-year-old clearly feels at home at the County Ground. No fresh contract is on the table at this stage but Smith clearly feels he is part of the picture under the Onuora regime. The former Watford man made his return to action yesterday after missing the last two games through a combination of injury and suspension. Steve Jenkins and Andy Nicholas have wrestled control of the respective full-back slots during his absence and Smith knows he may have to be patient. Gifting Yeovil Town their opening goal in yesterday's second string 2-2 draw probably didn't aid his cause but Smith was just glad to be in action again. He said: "I was pleased to get 90 minutes under my belt. "When you've been out of it for a couple of weeks you lose your match sharpness. "The first time I got the ball I gave a goal away so it wasn't the best start. Hopefully the gaffer won't hold it against me. "When you lose your place, you have to work harder to get it back. "It's probably up to Jenks or Nicho to lose their place rather than for me to win it as such. I know it's going to be tough." Smith (pictured left during yesterday's reserve game) is one of several players who will be out of contract in the summer. The vibes for an extended stay seem to be positive. He said: "I had a chat with the gaffer a week or so ago. It's nice to be mentioned as part of the future. We'll see I suppose. "The gaffer's good, the lads are good, the training's good and it's good to be playing. "I think I have improved since I came here and you're always improving when you're playing games." Smith's return to fitness gives Onuora another happy defensive headache with his captain also likely to come back into the reckoning for Friday's match at Southend. Onuora said: "Sean O'Hanlon trained on Tuesday and providing there's no reaction, will come into contention for Friday. "It's nice to have good headaches." It is now just six days until the January transfer window slams shut and the Town boss has reiterated his desire to see no further activity involving his club during that time. He said: "Hopefully we keep the full complement. I'm happy with squad and I'm not looking to bring anyone in. "The only reason I would bring people in now is if we lost anyone else for any reason."   more...
