Fine them all

DECADES of human endeavour with burgeoning scientific expertise and we have still not discovered biodegradable chewing gum (SA, It's a sticky issue, Jan 17).

Three pence to buy and 10p to clean up is uneconomic and clearly does not influence the attitudes of consumers or manufacturers. £20,000 to treat the town centre might go to more worthy causes. On the spot fines sound like a Draconian measure, so I think they are worth a try.

Why not extend this to littering, spitting, urinating and vomiting? I never imagined that I would go out into the community in 2006 armed with a bucket of detergent to wash a pool of vomit from the local telephone box.
