We should all work together

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Saturday 21st Jan 2006.

IN response to Nick Martin's comments regarding the redevelopment of the County Ground, I find it interesting that so many negative comments are coming from a Swindon councillor.

Especially when this particular individual is the person who put together the objections for a new stadium in the Shaw area.

What does Mr Martin have against our football club? We should be together as a town to try and make this redevelopment happen. When he talks about needing a £25,000,000 investor he seems to either want to scare the public or he has not fully done his homework?

As I understand things, the council would sell off some land to raise the money to build this much-needed development, while keeping ownership of the new stadium for a much-increased yearly rental.

The new stadium would allow for much higher revenue coming into the club which currently has around 25 to 30 opportunities to gain revenue only per year (matchdays).

New facilities, including conferencing and banqueting, and opportunities to have differing events held at the ground etc, etc, would all bring in much-needed revenue, and allow the football club to step up and grow, rather than being pushed back into oblivion as Mr Martin would obviously like.

This redevelopment would also bring much-needed low-cost housing to the area and lots of job opportunities.

STEVE MORGAN.
