MRSA on the rise

From the archive, first published Wednesday 28th Sep 2005.

More than one in eight Britons have a friend or family member who has contracted the deadly MRSA bug. That figure rises to a quarter of the population knowing someone whose family or friends have been affected.

Government figures show around 5,000 people a year die from hospital-acquired MRSA, and the outcry over cleanliness in wards became a key issue in this year's general election.

The poll findings of the national survey were revealed at the annual conference of Infection Control Nurses Association.
