Forces do not need to be amalgamated

From the archive, first published Wednesday 28th Sep 2005.

HAVING lived and worked in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire for much of my life, I view with misgivings the news that the two counties police services may have to be amalgamated with others.

I do not subscribe to the view that bigger is necessarily better. I accept that there are occasions when a police force cannot cope with a particular problem but however large the force may be or become there will always be times when outside assistance is needed for instance the G8 summit or a major disaster. Amalgamations are not needed for much of the run of the mill work of the police service which is very well handled by the present forces.
