Bursary gives RAF dream a flying start

From the Salisbury Journal, first published Wednesday 21st Sep 2005.

AN Amesbury schoolgirl is set to reach for the skies after winning a prestigious bursary from Qinetiq, at Boscombe Down, that will help her with her education for the next two years.

Stephanie Robb, a Year 10 pupil, at Stonehenge School, will receive a grant that she plans to use to help her realise her dream of a career in the RAF.

She said: "Qinetiq will apparently now provide me with a weekly sum of money for the next two years - that means I don't have to take a part-time job for pocket money, as most young people do at my age."

Delighted Stephanie added: "I can't believe my luck. It will make such a difference to my chances of doing well." As part of the bursary, Qinetiq will provide her with between £2,000 and £3,000 over two years, a laptop and sponsorship to go on a university taster course next summer.

Stephanie was part of a shortlist of 13 pupils who attained the highest possible levels of achievement in their Key Stage 3 SATs at Stonehenge School in mathematics and science.

She then competed against three other pupils but Stephanie best matched the qualities Qinetiq were looking for.

Headteacher Nigel Roper said: "This bursary is a superb example of the way in which private enterprise may contribute effectively to the education of today's young people in the state sector.

"The choice of Stephanie to receive this bursary was incredibly difficult as all those at interview demonstrated the finest qualities. I am sure she will greatly benefit from help she will now receive and applaud Qinetiq's benevolence."
