The camera truth, at last

From the archive, first published Saturday 17th Sep 2005.

SO at last the truth. It was interesting to read Saira Khan's letter (SA, Sept 12) of the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership.

In it she states that camera sites in Wiltshire are justified "either as a result of casualties or because a significant number of motorists are exceeding the posted speed limit and it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt."

We have always been led to believe that cameras were located in areas that had a known accident record.

How can Ms Khan know that significant numbers are breaking the posted speed limit?

It would also seem that the Safety Camera Team employ psychics who can foretell where accidents will happen!

It is a widely held belief that cameras are purely money raising things, and that speed limits are deliberately being lowered for the sole purpose of catching more motorists and nothing to do with road safety. Ms Khan's letter does nothing to dispel those beliefs.
