Democracy?

From the archive, first published Saturday 10th Sep 2005.

I EXPECT many borough councillors who are standing for re-election in next year's elections will be reluctant to respond to Andrew Maguire's request (Adver Sept 3) for their views on building next to Coate Water.

Coun David Glaholm (Labour, Penhill) who is on the planning committee is in favour of letting the University of Bath build where it wants.

Recently he told me he doesn't care how many millions of signatures the Save Coate Coalition gets on its petition, he will do what he thinks is right for Swindon.

Has he looked at the planning application to see why people are concerned about the proposals? Evidently not!

With 25,000 people against the plans for Coate, many of whom live in Penhill, it seems that we are wasting our time. So much for democracy.
