Turton to the rescue for Ciren

From the archive, first published Wednesday 31st Aug 2005.

Career-best figures of 5-22 from John Turton and a composed 40 from Rich Hudson led Cirencester to victory in their Gloucestershire League Division One relegation clash against Ruardean Hill.

Cirencester's seven-wicket win means they moved above Ruardean and out of the two relegation places with just one match to play.

Turton's fine 10-over spell of left-arm spin was the culmination of pressure built up by the entire attack backed up by an energetic display in the field.

Youngsters James Shackleton and James Denyer tied down the opening batsmen from the start and Shackleton in particular was unfortunate not to pick up more than one wicket.

Iain Moore and James Constable bowled arguably their best spells of the campaign, with Moore's 3-28 off 12 overs his best league haul since joining this season.

Meanwhile Constable's six overs went for just six runs.

Dan Robbins' maiden Cirencester hundred led the secons string to a comprehensive victory over Upton St Leonards 2nd and kept their hopes of catching Cheltenham Allsorts at the top of 2nd XI Division One alive.

After arriving at the crease in the second over, Robbins' swung the momentum his team's way before they suffered a second setback when Ed Alderman was clean bowled.

Dan Hudson joined Robbins at the crease and the two added a further 109 runs to set up a platform.

When Hudson was caught at square leg for 37, Alex Harris destroyed the Upton St Leonards bowling attack with an innings of 62 not out off merely 35 balls.

He reached his half century with two driven sixes while Robbins brought up a well-deserved 100 off 107 balls as Cirencester posted the formidable total of 254-3.

In reply, Upton St Leonards never got going thanks to an excellent spell from Tom Putney who picked up three wickets as Cirencester wrapped up a 112-run victory.

The third team's 203-4 put them in command against Cricklade and 14-year-old Hugo Price produced a personal best of 4-16 to ensure a fine victory by 28 runs.
