Where is common courtesy?

From the archive, first published Saturday 26th Nov 2005.

WHATEVER happened to customer service, or even common courtesy, concepts that seem to have disappeared from the service manuals.

I am very tired of waiting in to keep appointments with tradesmen/servicemen who don't turn up and do not let you know that they are not coming.

This tardiness is from reputable companies who have been in business many years.

I'm not sure how these companies view themselves. Is there enough work about, that there is no need to bother, or do they feel their time is more valuable than their customer?

I would make a plea to workmen/servicemen. If you are not going to keep the pre-arranged appointment, please let the customer know. We have jobs too and not a lot of available time.

Letter writing is another dying art. Letters of complaint are very rarely answered. In this electronic age, there's nobody there. No one is on the end of a phone, and all errors are attributed to the computer.

I can't believe I'm the only unlucky one. Is this a problem for the rest of your readership?
