Invasion of the Oompa Loompas

SHOPPERS in Swindon did a double take when they saw Oompa Loompas wandering through the town centre.

They were spotted climbing on buses and causing mayhem yesterday.

The orange-faced characters, from the Roald Dahl children's story Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, were actually a group of students from New College who were promoting a charity fancy dress party and film show at the college on Friday.

Lucy Rowe, 50, of Lawn said: "I couldn't believe my eyes. If it is an invasion I can only hope they've brought plenty of chocolate with them."

The event, which will be raising money for Children In Need will include a screening of the film Charlie And The Chocolate Factory in the college's Phoenix Theatre, alongside an Oompa Loompa-style party.

And they want everyone to dress as their favourite character from the book.

New College spokesman Leigh Debbage said the college restaurant would be the setting for the party, which starts at 5.30pm.

"Performing arts students will create the perfect party atmosphere as Oompa Loompas and other favourite characters, while local band Diskasta will give the Oompa Loompa songs a ska makeover."

Film tickets cost £3 and are available from the Swindon Tourist Information Centre or by calling 01793 614837.

Those not seeing the film are also welcome to come to the party, with a minimum donation of £2 to Children in Need.
