Middle Britain

From the archive, first published Tuesday 15th Nov 2005.

MR Franklin misses the whole point of our political system when he praises the opinions of Mr Scott. It works by keeping those like him well away from power.

The great British public, when they can be bothered to vote, make it very clear they prefer politicians who will steer a central course.

This forces all of them to seek the middle ground. Plenty of individuals or parties offer more radical solutions but nobody votes for them. Surely he cannot have failed to notice what happened to several new parties which promised to destroy the status quo.
