We need to save railway heritage

From the archive, first published Tuesday 15th Nov 2005.

IS anyone doing anything to prevent the closure of the last remaining part of the old Swindon Railway works?

Currently occupied by Great Western Heritage Trust and providing the last tangible engineering link with the old works, the trust is due for eviction mid-December.

The proposal is then to convert to yet more shopping outlets.

It is highly ironic that in 2006 there will be major celebrations of Brunel 200 the 200th anniversary of Brunel's birth.

Swindon Works is to be included in the proposed designation of World Heritage Site of the railway from Paddington-Bristol and yet at the same time, the town is allowing this last piece of genuine heritage to be cast aside.

Surely it is not too late to prevent this. Could not a campaign be mounted to raise public awareness and to save this piece of the town's history?
