I AGREE one hundred per cent with Barrie Thompson (SA November 10) that it is important for all school pupils to have a hot meal during the day.
However I totally object to any rise in my council tax as it has already risen excessively over the last few years.
Also I should point out that income tax, national insurance and duty on various items have also increased and over 60 stealth taxes have also been introduced since Tony Blair came to power.
I have a much better idea how to get the money needed to provide adequate school meals, that is make sure that the money we already pay into council coffers is spent more wisely and carefully, not wasted as we have seen in the past.
A few years ago the council spent thousands on personal computers for all 59 councillors, which were hardly used. All councillors can claim allowances and the mayor's chauffeur-driven limousine must cost a lot to run. I am sure other readers can think of more ways in which our money is wasted by those we elect to represent us.
Sorry Barrie but my wife and myself object most strongly to being treated like walking cheque books and I'm sure most Swindon council tax payers feel the same way. Instead of stinging us even more look at how you can spend the money we already pay more effectively and at which expenditure can be reduced, or cut out altogether.
