Factory on show

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 4th Jul 2003.

THE president of Salisbury & District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Andrew Hodder, and chamber members, are visiting Shelwork Industries next Thursday for a tour of the factory and lunch.

The factory, on the Dolphin Industrial Estate, off Southampton Road in Salisbury, employs 49 visually-impaired and disabled people from the Salisbury area. The visit will enable chamber members to learn how the staff carry out engineering, woodwork, assembly and packing duties, and how Action for Blind People supports people with disabilities who are looking for jobs, either within the factory or outside.

Members will be able to take part in a raffle to raise funds for the Ace of Hearts appeal, based at Salisbury District Hospital.

Jane Crowther, of Shelwork Industries, said: "This will be a great opportunity for the chamber of commerce to learn about what Shelwork can offer to people with disabilities and how employers can benefit from visually-impaired and disabled employees."

Besides producing parts for the motor industry, school furniture and seating, the factory helped employees develop self confidence and skills and supported them in moving into mainstream employment.
