Savings priority

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 4th Jul 2003.

YOUNG people in Salisbury are four times more likely to want a savings account than a social life, according to the Britannia Building Society.

The society's UK-wide survey was conducted to help it develop its products and services. It researched attitudes to spending and saving.

It revealed that Salisbury's 18 to 30-year-olds would rather have the cash than Saturday nights on the town.

Three out of five think financial security is more important than settling down and having a family.

The society says the survey shows that young people in Salisbury are harking back to the `only buy it if you can afford it' values of their grandparents, bucking the `buy now, pay later' trend.

More than 90 per cent think it is important to save for the future and 66 per cent are already in the savings habit.

They rank a comfortable living, owning their own home and being in a relationship over having a car, a hectic social life, holidays in the sun and the latest fashions.

With home ownership ranking so high, it is no surprise that 92 per cent wish there was more help to get on the property ladder.
