Couple hope for more Christmas Wild West parties

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 4th Jul 2003.

THE American Wild West could be coming to Wanborough once again this Christmas.

Last year farmers Joe and Sarah Smith rented some of their land to Country Club Catering to earn extra cash.

Now the couple have submitted a planning application to host a similar series of Wild West events in December, but are refusing to reveal details.

In 2002 the US-style events attracted up to 700 people a night, with 11 events and tickets ranging from £25 to £39.50.

The pair have farmed for a decade but have diversified to supplement their dairy herd income. In April last year they opened a freefall parachute school, and are set to develop an airfield for microlight enthusiasts.

The farm already has hangar facilities for 17 of the flying machines.

Mrs Smith confirmed that the couple have submitted a planning application but said she wanted to keep the details under wraps until it had been investigated by planning officers.

"We have sent in an application for something similar to what we held last year but it will not be heard before the council's planning committee for a couple of months probably," she explained.
