All-day street festival goes ahead

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 4th Jul 2003.

THIS year's Woolley Fest-ival will be a one-day street festival instead of the usual two days of concerts.

Festival organisers were forced to rethink their plans earlier this year when they were told the field they usually use was out of bounds.

The field is owned by the Woolley Grange Hotel, which wants to turn it into a wild flower meadow, and said the festival would cause too much damage to the grassland.

Jim Lynch, one of the team organising this year's event, said the committee had been faced with a tough decision.

He said: "Rather than let the whole event lapse for a year, we decided on a one-day street party in Woolley Street outside The George on July 19.

"We are focusing on family events and inter-pub competitions in the day and live music from local bands in the evening."

Town councillors in Brad-ford on Avon have voted to give the event £400.

Mr Lynch said: "We have to warn people not to bring cars, and we are not having as many rock bands as last year, to give the event a smaller feel."

The festival is linking up with a Roman street party in Church Street, with a parade of costumed children travelling between the two events.
