Hold-ups in town centre

FINISHING touches being made to a town centre face-lift in Bradford on Avon caused traffic chaos this week. Motorists were forced to sit in tailbacks as work was carried out to complete renovations at the Bull Pit, Town Bridge.

The site, which has undergone a number of refurbishments including making the popular spot into a walkway, will officially open today.

This week the bridge was reduced to single lane traffic causing tailbacks on the only crossing of the River Avon.

Renovation of the Bull Pit is a partnership between Bradford Town Council and Wiltshire County Council.

Vicky Landell Mills, town mayor, said: "I understand there were some tailbacks and traffic problems during the morning.

"The Bull Pit is a great spot in Bradford but was a bit run down, so the town council decided it needed a bit of a face lift."

Road works were due to be completed on yesterday in time for the grand opening today.

A spokesman for Wiltshire County Council said: "The council is working in partnership with Bradford's local authority to renovate the area.

"We apologise for any problems caused by the single lane system and traffic lights this week but the work was essential to the completion of the project."

High Sheriff David Newbigging officially opens the Bull Pit at 2pm today followed by a tour of the town and refreshments.
