January is now the new December

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Monday 27th Oct 2003.

The humble turkey-dinner could soon be a thing of the past, according to Ruth Callard-Roger's, owner of party organisers' Elements Events.

She says many firms are shunning the traditional roast for buffets and finger-food.

"It definitely seems to be losing popularity," said Ruth.

"We are seeing a lot more themes such as Wild West and Caribbean nights so the caterers we hire try to match the food to them."

Ian Bowyer of Coleshill Catering says he has also seen a sharp drop in requests for turkey with all the trimmings.

"There is definitely more demand for buffets now than there used to be," he said.

The chef adds that a growing number of his clients are choosing January to hold their parties, rather than the weeks running up to the big day.

He said: "We used to be quite quiet during January but a lot of companies are waiting until after Christmas when people come back from work and feel a bit miserable.

"It is a good morale boost for the staff and I think a lot of people are too busy in the run-up to Christmas to think about parties."

Some top-tips for getting a party to go with a bang.

Budget make sure you work out the cost per person.

Venue look around at different locations, such as hotels or barns.

Catering are you going to choose the in-house catering and are you going for buffet or traditional sit-down meal?

Drink is the firm going to be putting a tab behind the bar?

Dressing how are you going to decorate the place?

Entertainment you need to think about the choice of DJ and other forms of entertainment such as a casino.

Time-plan get organised and work out what needs to happen and when.

Transport how are the staff going to get there and, just as importantly, return. Think about coaches and taxis.

Dates a lot of people have their party in November or leave it until January when venues often lower their charges.

Equipment special consideration should be given to what entertainment is being planned. If people are going to be drunk Gladiators is not such a good idea.
