Controversy as Chippenham lose to late goal

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Monday 27th Oct 2003.

A controversial injury-time goal gifted Worcester City a 2-1 win at Chippenham in the Premier Division.

The Bluebirds looked like claiming a point as Ellis Wilmot kicked the ball into touch to allow injured Scott Walker to receive treatment in the 93rd minute.

But Worcester failed to return possession to the hosts and from the throw-in Craig Dean attacked and crossed for Paul Carty to score.

Furious protests ensued and Tommy Saunders said it was `the worst case of bad sportsmanship I've ever seen', but had his side taken their chances, the whole unsavoury episode would have been avoided.

Worcester keeper Danny McDonnell made a series of fine stops, denying Gary Horgan on 11 minutes and diving to tip away Walker's drive.

Martin Paul missed a one-on-one and Nathan Edwards headed just wide.

Worcester had the better of things after the interval but Chippenham took the lead against the run of play when Charlie Griffin fired home on 68.

Worcester levelled 12 minutes from time when Darren Middleton who netted through a mass of bodies.

Middleton then fired a penalty wide but Chippenham's reprieve was short lived as Carty netted the late goal.

CHIPPENHAM: Mountain, Charity, Thorne, Robertson, Gould, Edwards, Walker, Horgan, Mings, Paul, Harrington.

Subs: Wilmot, Griffin, Bright, Badman, Hervin.
