Salisbury's big reward

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Monday 27th Oct 2003.

SALISBURY CITY are looking forward to a bumper pay day after the FA Cup first round draw handed the Whites a trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Manager Nick Holmes an FA Cup winner with Southampton in 1976 takes his side to Hillsborough in a fortnight and he admitted the club "could not have asked for a better draw".

With Salisbury entitled to half the gate receipts from a 20,000 plus crowd, the Dr Martens Eastern Division club will be handed a mammoth financial boost regardless of the result.

Holmes' men sealed their place with an easy 5-1 win over Wessex League Lymington & New Milton.

The visitors stunned the majority of the 1,190 crowd at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium by taking the lead after just 48 seconds.

But Josh Thomas soon levelled and Adam Wallace's penalty put the Whites ahead.

Wallace hit his second on the hour and sub Darren Crook made it 4-1.

Even goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer got in on the act, the ex-Cirencester man converting a late penalty to complete the scoring.

Screwfix Direct League Paulton Rovers were unable to join Salisbury in the first round draw after losing 1-0 at Hornchurch, who go on to host Darlington.

Gloucester City were beaten 2-0 at Bishop Stortford, denying the Tigers a trip to Mansfield.
