From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 3rd Jan 2003.
THE Wiltshire Police Authority is to present its 2003/4 budget proposals at an event at Swindon Town Football Club on February 11 at 6.30pm.
The Police Authority is required by law to consult the business community on its budget proposals for the forthcoming year prior to agreeing the budget and setting the level of council tax payable by the local community.
The current budget is approximately £80m and this finances everything connected with providing a policing service for Wiltshire.
Although the consultation seminar is primarily concerned with budget matters, it also provides an opportunity for those attending to raise issues about general policing matters and question senior officers from the Constabulary and senior members of the Police Authority.
The event will be attended by the chairman of the Police Authority supported by fellow members, the clerk and the treasurer and either the Chief, Deputy or Assistant Chief Constable, to be decided nearer the time.
Hosts Swindon Chamber of Commerce will open the presentation followed by an address from the chairman of the Police Authority.
There will be a series of brief talks which will be followed by questions, views and comments from the audience.
Wiltshire Police Authority is responsible for ensuring that there is an efficient and effective policing service in Wiltshire and it holds the Chief Constable to account for delivering this.
It approves the annual budget and monitors expenditure during the year.
The chief constable is responsible for day to day operational policing and is answerable to the Police Authority for the performance of the Force.
