Future looking bright

CHAMBER NEWS: A TROWBRIDGE firm JPCInfonet (JPCi) has beaten off competition from global giants Worldcom and Cable & Wireless to secure the renewal of a major web hosting contract.

JPCi first won the contract in a bid against Cable & Wireless in June last year to provide high speed internet access as part of a long-term web hosting deal with Future Publishing.

Since then, JPCi has worked closely with the UK's sixth largest magazine publisher (based on retail sales value) to establish the hosting service locally which gives Future Publishing easy access to its servers when upgrading hardware and software.

This easy access service has become especially important following a recent deal between Future Publishing and MSN.co.uk, which sees Future supplying the games channel to the MSN portal.

Since this deal, the number of visitors to the Future/MSN games website has grown substantially and JPCi is accommodating this increase by providing Future Publishing with the necessary bandwidth.

"Instead of a lengthy three hour journey each way which incurs considerable cost, not to mention the loss of a member of staff for an entire day, our engineers can now visit the hosting centre within 20 minutes, complete their tasks and often be back within a couple of hours," said Jon Moore, Future Publishing's IT manager.

"This has led to a much improved service to our internet customers and a considerable cost reduction with regard to supporting our internet investment," he said.

Peter Wordley, JPCi's managing director, said: "Where we are different is that we can provide all the facilities of the major telecomms companies but from a locally based centre.

"Coupled with our ability to be aggressive on price, we have found being a smaller company actually works to our advantage as we can also be more flexible and responsive to customers' needs than our competitors.

"The flexibility of this local service means that Future Publishing can be more reactive to changes in their customers' needs, which is essential in today's extremely competitive on-line publishing business."

In addition to the hosting of Future Publishing's websites, JPCi has also been awarded the contracts to supply internet connectivity to their Bath and London corporate offices.

The business was also won against stiff opposition from some of the largest internet service providers in Europe.

And Mr Wordley believes that the commitment from Future Publishing endorses his firm's position as one of the most flexible and robust internet service providers in the market.

"Given that Future Publishing has made a significant commitment to us following evaluation of our business and technical infrastructure, I think that it goes a long way to proving that JPCi is able to support the most demanding of internet requirements," he said.
