Vision for village is put on ice

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 3rd Jan 2003.

VILLAGERS in Semington are no closer to getting a new community hall and sports fields after the latest plans were withdrawn.

Laing Homes' officials have withdrawn plans for the 95-home development, which would have included sports pitches and a purpose-built village hall.

The long-running application hit another stumbling block last month when parish councillors lodged objections to the developers' latest proposals.

Village leaders refused to back the application because they were unhappy with the position of the village hall and size of the sports fields.

Sports club officials welcomed the parish council's stance saying the motel field and salt tip site was an important development for the village, which needed to be perfect first time.

Laing Homes carried out extensive consultation on the updated plans with the last village poll going in their favour.

Original plans for a Poundbury style development, based on Prince Charles' Dorset village, were dropped.

The 15-acre motel field and salt tip site is located close to Semington roundabout between Melksham and Trowbridge.
