Career set to take off

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 3rd Jan 2003.

A FORMER Bradford on Avon schoolboy has embarked on a high-flying career with the RAF after graduating with the rank Flying Officer.

Peter Geddes, 21, whose parents Bill and Isobel live in Trowbridge, attended St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon.

Flying Officer Geddes joined the RAF in June after graduating from the University of Leeds with a BSc in Geological Sciences.

He is now celebrating his graduation from his Initial Officer Training Course, in the RAF College at Cranwell, near Sleaford.

A keen sportsman and experienced mountaineer, Mr Geddes last year climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron and enjoys golf, skiing and cycling.

The graduation parade was overseen by Air Marshal Rob Wright, who is the UK Military Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Union (EU).

The Initial Officer Training Course aims to provide students with general service and character development training to enable them, after professional training, to fill appropriate junior officer posts.

The 24-week course includes both physical and ground defence training, leadership and management skills, operational studies and air experience.

Following graduation from the course, Flying Officer Geddes now intends to begin his professional training as a pilot.
